what is answer engine optimization (AEO) for AI agents?

SEO gets you on the list. AEO gets you in the answer.

what AEO is

Answer engine optimization is the practice of structuring your content and technical surfaces so that AI-powered answer engines — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini — can find, understand, and cite your product when someone asks a relevant question.

Where SEO targets a ranked list of links, AEO targets the synthesized paragraph the engine writes before the user clicks anything. The question “what AI agent helps with X” returns an AI-written answer, not ten blue links. If you’re not in that answer, you’re invisible to everyone who asks that way — and the number of people asking that way is growing fast.

how AEO differs from SEO

SEO and AEO share some foundations — good content, clean structure, credible backlinks — but they diverge in important ways:

  • Machine-readable surfacesSEO rewards human-readable prose. AEO requires structured metadata: llms.txt, schema.org JSON-LD, explicit entity declarations. Without these, AI engines don't know what type of thing you are.
  • Directory presenceGoogle indexes almost everything. AI engines index what they trust, and they learn trust from the directories they already crawl: Smithery, Agent.directory, GitHub, and a short list of others. Not being there is a hard block.
  • Citation signalsGoogle PageRank rewards inbound links. AEO rewards being cited by sources the engine has already seen. Getting one credible reference is worth more than fifty thin backlinks.
  • Freshness cadenceGoogle tolerates stable pages. AI engines down-weight stale signals. Regular refreshes to your llms.txt and schema.org data keep you in scope.

the AEO checklist for an AI agent

  1. 1.
llms.txtAdd a plain-text file at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. State your agent's name, what it does, who it's for, and how to access it. One page. No jargon. Write for a language model that will read it in a single pass.
  2. 2.
schema.org JSON-LDAdd structured metadata to your site's <head>: Organization or SoftwareApplication type, your name, URL, description, and knowsAbout fields. This tells engines what category of thing you are — not just that you exist.
  3. 3.
Directory submissionsSubmit to Smithery (MCP), Agent.directory, GitHub, Virtuals, and the others AI engines index. Being listed in one is a prerequisite; being listed in five is a compounding signal.
  4. 4.
sitemap.xmlPublish a clean sitemap. Mark high-priority pages explicitly. AI crawlers follow sitemaps the same way Googlebot does.
  5. 5.
robots.txtExplicitly allow the AI engine crawlers: GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, anthropic-ai, cohere-ai. The wildcard * covers them, but being explicit is an intent signal — and for an AI agent, credibility requires you demonstrably do what you say.
  6. 6.
Citation seedingGet at least one credible external reference before you need the traffic. A blog post, a directory write-up, a GitHub README. The engine needs to see you from somewhere other than your own domain.

why AI agents have it harder than most

AI agent search results are thin and unstable. The queries people ask (“AI agent that does X”) return AI-generated answers that are built from a narrow corpus of well-indexed sources. Agents without structured surfaces are invisible regardless of quality — and the window to claim early positioning in these answer corpora is right now, while the indexes are still forming.

The agents showing up in ChatGPT and Perplexity responses today are almost always those with an llms.txt at their domain, a listing in at least one directory the engine trusts, and at least one external citation. That’s the bar. It’s achievable — but only if you do the work.

· what envvoy does

envvoy automates this checklist. every agent that signs up gets an llms.txt, schema.org JSON-LD, sitemap, explicit AI crawler permissions, and submissions to the eight directories that matter — all generated and maintained automatically. the monitoring layer tells you when your citation presence drops before your competitors notice the gap.

every agent deserves a chance to be heard.
